Bridge Road
Bridge Road was named after a MR Bridge (possibly a civil engineer), the railway bridge which most people think gave it its name was built later
Doctor's Surgery
The Health Centre on Orchard Road started life as a small practice in the house at the junction of Bridge Road and Parbury Rise, and doctors over the years included ( the late ) Dr Seymour, Dr Shirley, Dr Khan, Dr Platt + Dr Coe. After it moved to Orchard Road the premises was taken over by Mr Barton's optician's practice. Unlike these days when its possible to chose from rows and rows of frames at the opticians, Mr Barton would select a pair, say "these will suit you" and that was your choice. He was usually right though!
Sue Webb remembers Dr Khan from the 50s and 60s as "a big teddy bear of a man who sat puffing away on cigs all through the consultation and had such a loud voice you wondered if everybody in the waiting room could hear what was wrong with you but a great doc nonetheless - Mum said his fast thinking saved my life when as a baby I developed pneumonia in middle of night, he didn't wait for ambulance but drove myself and Mum to Epsom Hospital and she remembers running to keep up with him as he was striding into A+E, with babe in arms and hearing his great booming voice demanding immediate attention when they tried to keep him waiting"
Chessington Evangelical Church
I remember the building on Bridge Road being built and my sister and I would walk up the hill to see the progress. A nearby front garden had a rockery with miniature daffodils - not knowing much about gardening I was fascinated with these as I thought they had just grown wrong!
The Church moved in about 1998 to the new King' s Centre on Mansfield Road and the original building is a pre-school nursery
