Fire Guard

During WWII my grandfather was Head Fire Guard for Chessington and we have these photos of him with his colleagues taken outside the Burnt Stub at Chessington Zoo.

Please e-mail Local Memories if you can name any of the people in the photos

When Wilson Road was bombed he didn't return home for several days as he was busy clearing the site. As a Fire Guard he would often deal with incidents at night (bomb damage to roads and buildings, unexploded bombs, unsafe buildings) which would then cause problems to the bus service he ran the next day
