Garden Fetes
One year, about 1965, my sister and two friends held a garden fete in our back garden, inviting neighbours and friends from Compton Crescent to help them raise money for the RSPCA. The amount raised featured in the Borough News, a sum of a few shillings.
The event was very popular with the neighbours who encouraged us to have them the next two years too, which we did on a slightly larger scale.
Months of planning went in to the later events with Mum spending evenings stitching outfits for Sindy Dolls and us children collecting Bric-a-brac from neighbours and hand-colouring every programme individually.
Nearer the time neighbours also baked cakes for us to sell
