Government Buildings on Leatherhead Road

Leatherhead Road Government Offices 1999

My Mum remembers this site as an orchard - when there was news that it was to be built on after the Second World War she went with other local people and "scrumped" some apples!

The Government Buildings were built of breeze block and brick, with a main corridor with "spurs" going off on each side, the same design as those locally at the Tolworth Toby Jug Ministry of Agriculture site, Tolworth Kingston Road Survey site, Hinchley Wood Tax Offices and the Chessington Garrison Lane Tax Offices, providing very basic office accommodation up to the 1990s. The Leatherhead Road site made way for these Wimpey Homes.

The buildings became surplus when Government policy was to move it staff into areas with fewer employment opportunities, and staff and the work were relocated to other areas including Glasgow and Sutton Coldfield
